Porsche unveils new Asia-Pacific Motorsport Office during Shanghai Auto Show

Porsche announced the opening of a brand new Porsche Motorsport Asia-Pacific office in Shanghai today at the Motorsport Night during Shanghai Auto Show, signaling renewed dedication by the German automaker to help develop motorsport culture in the Asia-Pacific.

The new Porsche Motorsport Asia-Pacific office will provide expanded access to Porsche’s line-up of GT models in Asia and will be accompanied by stronger technical, engineering and marketing support for the region.

Its location in Shanghai, home to Porsche China and the region’s top one-make series Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, is a natural fit for the new office. China also maintained its status as Porsche’s number one market in the world last year a 65,246 Porsche car sales in 2016.

“This is a great step forward for Porsche and the thousands of loyal Porsche fans in Asia. This new office will not only provide a base to continue building our regional motorsport activities, it will also act as a valuable portal for customers who want to take action and get involved themselves,” CEO and President of Porsche China Franz Jung said.

The iconic Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car is currently one of the most popular choices for competitive motorsport in Asia, having enjoyed the spotlight in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia and several other regional races. The new Motorsport Asia-Pacific office will provide more options and support for drivers with the recently introduced Cayman GT4 Clubsport offering the ideal solution for customers looking to start their racing career and the Porsche 911 GT3 R, providing an opportunity for those looking for an even higher performing model and level of competition.

The decision to open the new office comes as the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia hits record-breaking audience numbers, with more than 541,000 people attending races and 1.5 million people watching live broadcasts online in 2016. With a total of more than 270 hours of Porsche Carrera Cup Asia programmes broadcast on TV last season, the competition was accessible by fans in 135 countries.

The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia has already proven a critical platform for developing young motorsport talent in Asia, with the Porsche China Junior Programme and the Carrera Cup Asia Talent Pool providing unprecedented training and opportunities for the region’s next generation of drivers.

Launching its first race weekend at the beginning of April, the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia is one of the biggest and fastest growing of 8 Carrera Cup competitions hosted by Porsche worldwide.

The launch of the new office also coincides with a boom of motorsport activity in China and across the Asia-Pacific. The Porsche GT3 Cup Trophy China, which provides an ideal setting for amateur drivers to mix with seasoned professionals, will make its debut this year with its first two rounds held alongside China GT’s season start at Beijing’s Goldenport Park Circuit next month. Several other successful international GT competitions have also shifted their focus on Asia this year, with the Blancpain GT Asia kicking off its inaugural season at the beginning of the month. The surge in motorsport has created an ideal window for Porsche Motorsport to bring its full GT portfolio to customers in Asia.

Stepping in to lead the new office is the current Motorsport Manager of Porsche China – Alexandre Gibot. Gibot was selected as Head of Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific for his rich experience and involvement with Porsche Motorsport in Asia, having been in charge of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia for more than 2.5 years. Prior to that, he managed the Porsche Carrera Cup France from 2011 to 2014.
